Highmark Awards Grant to Purchase Vision Screening Equipment
Harrisburg, PA -- Tri-County Association for the Blind is the recipient of a $6,720 grant awarded by Highmark Blue Shield. This grant will be used to purchase a Humphrey FDT Visual Fields Screener for the agency's Prevention of Blindness Department.
The Prevention of Blindness department provides vision screening for both adults and children throughout Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties. The main focus of the Prevention of Blindness department is to find undetected, yet treatable conditions in children and adults. Adults are screened regularly at area health fairs, businesses, and other locations, while children, ages 3-5 are screened at area preschools, daycares and kindergarten registrations. "This piece of vision screening equipment will be valuable in our efforts for early detection of eye problems and conditions," states Nancy Altemose, Prevention of Blindness Director.
In addition to vision screening, the agency's Prevention of Blindness department offers educational programs on eye health and safety for adults and children. These programs include an interactive session for children in first grade and a fourth grade program, which focuses on eye safety while participating in sports and other activities.
